How Does Publishing Survive in a World Tipping Into Crisis?

Michael Jensen, Director of Strategic Web Communications at National Academies Press, presents his solution for the survival of scholarly publishing over the next couple of decades. If you can get past the fearmongering and pseudoscience, he has some interesting ideas regarding open source publishing.

Mr. Jensen makes two strong statements in the videos.

  • The print book must become the exception, not the rule.
  • Open access is a business model for long-term survival.

There’s no doubt that publishing is being pulled towards the open access business model. I recently posted about The Book Oven’s efforts in cloud-based publishing. It’s exciting to see the changes in the industry, and I look forward to seeing the futre of the book.
